Well, it’s been a long few months working on the monument in the Memorial Park in Richfield Springs. This park sits next to our home and has been a sad sight for a while. Overgrown shrubs had all but hidden the monuments from view on both Route 20 and Monticello Street.
Our goal was to clean up, renovate and re-landscape the park. This included removing shrubs that had become overgrown and unsightly. Trimming the tree branches up to a walkable height, we wanted people to be able to walk through the park without having to dodge hanging branches. This also had the effect of allowing more light into the park. We also built new gardens which will hold white peonies and yellow re-blooming daylilies. On top of that, the monument got a power cleaning along with the patio. The final thought was to add QR-coded signs in the garden that people can scan to learn more about Our Flag, the TAPS song, local lost heroes, and a thank you page for people who helped us make this project work.
This project took a bit of time to complete because of weather and material issues. Our original design had wooden fences holding the flower garden, but decided that would leave too much clean-up from spilling mulch and a lot more edging. In the end we decided to go with stones, which gave the monument a castle appearance and was able to house the mulch and the flowers in an easy to edge structure.
In the end, we hope that everyone enjoys the refreshed park for years to come.
The picture above is the newly refreshed park finished on 5-30-22. Thank you to all who helped either physically, materially, or financially. Without you this project would not have been possible.
